Zebra recently sent Stratix one of its new MC9400 series rugged mobile computers so we could take it for a test drive. Designed for the most challenging environments, we quickly saw how these devices will improve speed and efficiency in retail, warehouse, manufacturing, or logistics operations.

Noticeably Quicker

Powering up our loaner MC9450, the first thing we noticed was how fast it is. Moving through menus or pulling up apps seems zippier than most of the smartphones we work with. Zebra says that compared to its predecessor—the MC9300—the MC9400 series features a new Qualcomm platform that cranks out 2.5 times the processing power. On our test model, there was absolutely zero lag launching applications and getting right to work.

Zebra says that compared to its predecessor—the MC9300—the MC9400 series features a new Qualcomm platform that cranks out 2.5 times the processing power. Remarkable Scanner Range

The MC9400 series features Zebra’s new extended range scan engine with IntelliFocus technology. It enables users to scan barcodes up to 100 feet away. Walking around the Stratix warehouse, we were impressed by how well it works. The scanners new green laser dot is more visible—especially in daylight—which means you can see what you’re scanning better when you’re trying to reach items that are high up on storage racks. It will also capture multiple barcodes in one scan and can be programed to select exactly the ones needed on any label.

The MC9400 series also has built-in Optical Character Recognition (OCR)—meaning it’ll convert text in camera images into machine-encoded text. That’s extremely useful for gathering data such as vehicle identification, meter and shipping container numbers, as well as information on driver’s licenses and identification cards.

Better Connectivity

The MC9400s are the first Zebra gun devices with both private and public 5G wireless data connectivity through either a physical SIM or eSIM. They also feature Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. It all adds up to dependable and instant application response times, increasing productivity, and workflow efficiency.

The improved Bluetooth also means longer battery life, and it minimizes device interference.

Super-Rugged

Like its predecessors, a major feature of the MC9400 series is its ability to take punishment in challenging environments. They’ve survived Zebra’s toughest drop and tumble testing. The display and scanner windows have Corning Gorilla Glass for scratch and shatter-resistance. The devices are also waterproof, so they still work after being submerged in water.

Zebra produces three models of the 9400 series—standard, freezer and non-incendive. The freezer model includes a heated touch panel and scanner exit window, plus a freezer-rated battery. The non-incendive model can be used in areas where hazardous materials are present—such as flammable gases.

Facial Recognition

Something that adds to the speed of use for the MC9400s is facial recognition. Pre-approved users just pick it up and start working without having to log in. It’s not only faster—it eliminates the risk of shared or compromised passwords.

Backwards Compatible

A feature of the MC9400 series that lowers the cost and in environmentally friendly is the devices are backwards compatible with previous versions. That means if you’re upgrading from the MC9300 series, all the accessories like chargers work just fine. You can use MC9200 and older charging accessories with an adapter.
