Managing mobility: Is a la carte outsourcing a viable alternative?

In this series on enterprise mobility options, the previous post discussed the differences between administering and supporting legacy technology vs. the unique demands that mobility of today places on in-house administration.

How about breaking the overall job into smaller pieces, then farming out your mobile support to multiple generalists? This takes some of the pressure off your people without them losing control, and it lets you focus more on operational strategy than putting out fires or managing device logistics. Sounds like an appealing plan, doesn’t it? But buyer beware:

  • Most of the niche suppliers are companies that haven’t been around long enough to develop their competency through the “entire” mobile ecosystem evolution. If you’re fortunate enough, though, “you may find a few companies to combine solutions that meet your needs.”
  • If you work with several vendors, each one requires a separate internal point of contact. Don’t expect them to pool your information among themselves so that everything aligns by device, user, application, and other variables. That’s still your job.
  • No matter how competent a specialty provider is, your company’s data is isolated from other relevant mobile support data. It’s up to you to bring external information in-house or into your corporate Cloud and integrate it with your own data.

This is a halfway measure that clearly solves some problems while creating others. For many companies, this approach makes more sense than trying to do everything related to mobility in-house, but be prepared for analytical challenges — and expect the inevitable finger-pointing when a device’s security is compromised or an application misbehaves.

TEMS (Telecom Expense Management Systems) and MDM (Mobile Device Management) are prime candidates for outsourcing. What if you could bring these services together with round-the-clock hardware and software support?
